Gallery For A Day
What is it?
Gallery for a Day is a travelling exhibition of the original artwork from well known Australian picture books. The exhibition in includes illustrations from: Alison Lester, Ann James, Mark Wilson, Bob Graham, Andrew McLean, Shaun Tom, David Miller, Judy Watson, Jan Ormerod and many more.
Many of the illustrations are displayed alongside their preliminary drawings so that the students can see the planning and preparation that goes into producing a picture book.

How does it work?
The exhibition is set up in a room at your school, library or community centre, with the illustrations displayed as if they are in a gallery. Student groups visit the exhibition for a one hour session. Amanda reads the children a book, highlighting an original illustration from the story. As a group she discusses with them the media and style the illustrator has used and why they made those choices. Students increase their observation skills as they explore and respond to the art work. Not only are they immersed in the world of book illustration; they become “art detectives”.
Working in groups of two or three, students consider the illustration in a book, and then it’s original, reporting back to the class the similarities/differences that they observe, and what medium the illustrator has used to produce the artwork. The students look at preliminary art works and reference material that has been used by illustrators. Students report their findings back to the group and learn from each other’s observations. Through the workshop experiences students gain an understanding of the development of a work of art and the creation of picture books .
This incursion can be structured to suit individual school’s needs and timetables and meets the requirements as detailed in the VELS document.

We also offer a Combined Workshop experience.
Amanda Cooper works with award winning children’s author/illustrator and teacher, Mark Wilson, to present a unique educational experience suitable for Prep to Grade 6. All students take part in both workshops.
